Natural Treatments for Diabetes in an Emergency

If you are diabetic, or know someone who has type 2 diabetes, you may wonder what you can do should a long term emergency cut off your supply of medications. It may be a good idea to have a supply of natural supplements on hand if traditional medications run out. Continue reading “Natural Treatments for Diabetes in an Emergency”

Natural Homemade Toothpaste

This lovely remineralizing toothpaste I found here was so easy to make and my teeth felt great both during and after brushing. My research into all things natural has led me to a daunting realization that our toiletry products expose us to way too many chemicals. On average people are exposed to approximately 5 pounds of chemicals per year just following their normal routine of shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and other beauty products used both on and in our bodies. This does not include things like pesticides.

Cold Process Soap Making

Below is a copy of a post I wrote for my new friend, Gretchen, over at Swamp Yankee Style! I love her carefree writing style, and all her great DIY projects. Definitely check out her farm’s blog.

Hello!

I have been asked to guest post my method of making homemade soaps. Thank you Gretchen! I am so excited to be welcomed into your circle of friends.

First let me start by saying I try to focus on keeping my family healthy, and to provide chemical free options in our household. I have always been a kind of nature nut. I enjoy outdoor activities, camping, backpacking, etc. And I practice a smidge of home, herbal and essential oil remedies at home. Continue reading “Cold Process Soap Making”

Homemade Laundry Powder

One of the best things that I can do for my family is make as much of the products we use from scratch. I try to keep our household as chemical free as possible, that means making my own household cleaners, toothpaste, and deodorant.

There are many reasons why you might want to make your own detergent rather than use store bought kind. Here is a website that outlines the many harmful chemicals found in commercial brands. Continue reading “Homemade Laundry Powder”

Natural Orange All Purpose Cleaner

This totally simple and natural cleaner is so easy you might think how can that possibly work?? You may not know that vinegar is a great cleaner and disinfectant, and it is natural, safe for kids, and environmentally friendly. “White distilled vinegar is a popular household cleanser, effective for killing most mold, bacteria, and germs, due to its level of acidity. Cleaning with white distilled vinegar is a smart way to avoid using harsh chemicals. You’ll also be glad to know that it is environmentally friendly and very economical.” Diluted vinegar can be used to clean just about anything, and if you need extra strength use it undiluted.

Herbal Glossary

Here is a compilation of common herbal terms that you may see when learning about herbs and herbal remedies. I will be updating this periodically.
It is important to learn homeopathic, herbal, and natural remedies, because access to a physician will be limited in the good times, and probably nonexistent in a disaster situation.

Natural Mosquito Repellent

Our family LOVES to go backpacking!  There is something to be said for hiking off into the woods getting away from it all (including other people) and roughing it.  The one thing I don’t appreciate about backpacking is mosquitoes! It seems that the last few times we have gone, mosquitoes have been our biggest complaint… Maybe it is the drought we are in here in Cali, that leaves the water levels ripe for mosquitoes to breed, I don’t know, but it has been a bug ridden season…
