I told my son I would make him an afghan since i just finished one for his sister, and I of course gave him the option to pick something on his own… He picked this Geometric Manadala Afghan by Justbunny.
While I was very drawn to this pattern at first, actually doing this pattern has turned out very troubling.
First, the pattern was in English terms and not US terms… no big deal, I can translate those. So, using word I updated the pattern stitch terminology, and since I was in there, I substituted my son’s color (various shades of browns) choices for hers.
This definitely made the pattern easier to maneuver, but the wording was also difficult and the row changes were not very defined, so I went into word again and added lines for each row distinguishing them as “row 1” “row 2” etc. Again, MUCH easier to navigate the pattern.
The corner changes that she suggests, I couldn’t seem to make those work… Using her “trick” corner left my square looking like a kaleidoscope. Since then I have been experimenting with many different corner options, none of which are quite right. I thought, however foolishly, that since my daughter’s afghan, with ever so much more “complicated” squares, went so well, that this simple square pattern would be a piece of cake… huh… not so much…
I have tried using the same 1 dc,1 ch, 1dc corner that she uses in the initial square center color, but that didn’t seem to work out. I have used 2dc, 1 ch, 2 dc, and I have used 2, 2, 2, and 1, 2, 1…
If anyone has any suggestions on how to make a corner work on a straight square like this, please send a message below.
